It’s possible I’ve seen too many movies, but are we in the apocalypse right now?

A few days ago I woke up to an orangey, hazy sky that gave me the feeling that I was breathing some toxic nuclear waste that came over the earth. 

I‘m wondering if the grass is going to burn up and the trees will shrivel and die. Maybe birds will start falling out of the sky and we will have to live underground in man-made shelters. 

I’m seeing more people wearing masks out in public and I’m wondering if before long the masks will come with oxygen tanks and look more like gas masks. 

Is this the end or will it all pass? 

Maybe I’m thinking all this because I’ve been watching a TV series about people living underground in a silo-style structure. They can’t go outside because the earth has been scorched and the air is unbreathable … or at least that’s what they think.

In reality, I know this crazy-looking sky is coming from northern Ontario. The other day Toronto had the worst air quality in the world. 

The real cause is due to more than two hundred fires raging way up north. 

Though the fires are over 1000 km’s away (over 600 miles), the smoke made its way to southern Ontario to where the greater population lives.

Where I live the temperatures are high and it’s full summer weather – hot with high humidity – just what we want at the beach. But, for a few days, you couldn’t see the sun, and the orangey haze gave the impression that it wasn’t nice outside. 

Some people in the US were whining that we didn’t put our invisible wall up between our two countries to catch the smoke before it drifted to them. There were a lot of complaints that we were not doing anything to turn off the fires.

Not to worry, I  believe that next week we’ve got a million Canadian volunteers to stand along the border with leaf blowers, in an attempt to blow the smokey air away from entering the US.

In reality, I think we might need our 100 or so firefighters who are fighting fires in the US to come back. I hope that’s okay.

With the air the way it’s been, you didn’t really feel like doing much outside. I did go for my regular walk on the beach and got in a bike ride, but I can see why most people wanted to stay indoors. The haze just didn’t make it appealing to be out there.

I know that soon the winds will change, the fires will die down and the sky will be blue again. All the complaints will stop (maybe) and we will get back to enjoying the summer weather, suntanning on the beach, splashing in the water, and walking on the golf course.

But until then we are pretending that the apocalypse has just begun. I hope there’s no zombies.

Here’s the thing: The Bible tells us that there will be an end to this world and it will be like an apocalypse. But when that comes, it won’t be a minor irritant, rather it will be total devastation. The thing is we can prepare for it now. By placing our faith in Jesus Christ, we can experience beyond the apocalypse to a brand new world with blue skies, goodness everywhere. Don’t wait until the sky turns dark and the air is tough to breathe. Trust in Jesus now.
