Dreading Another Shopping Trip

Shopping is NOT my favourite sport. I like to do almost anything else rather than shop, unless you count doing work around the house. But for me, shopping for clothes with my wife is in a whole other category.

For starters, shopping – especially in a mall – causes an energy drain in me like nothing else. I can enter a mall standing tall and walking briskly, but after a couple of stores I’m trudging along like a soldier carrying a 40 lb. backpack at the end of a 20 km hike.

I don’t understand how women can shop for clothes. The options are limitless, and I’m just talking about the stores to choose from. In any given mall there’s an average of three men’s clothing stores, but there are usually over 10 stores carrying women’s garments.

In each store, there are racks and racks of clothes that look very similar with merely a pattern or colour change to them. But it seems most women have to browse each and every rack.

There is something about touching the clothes that women feel they must do. They have to touch almost every piece of clothing in the store. I can tell if I’m going to like something standing five feet from the rack, but women have to grab hold of each piece and look at the front of it … and then the back of it.

I don’t know much about women’s fashion, but if you’re a “winter” don’t even go near the yellow and peach displays. It’s a waste of time.

Women’s clothing stores also crowd their space. There are too many clothes for the square footage. For men, this causes a huge problem. We are left standing in a sea of shirts and skirts and accessories with very little room to walk around.

It’s in women’s stores that you find men holding purses … not because they want to, but because their wives have to try on a third or fourth coat just to make sure that the first three coats that looked the same were the wrong ones.

Why don’t they put chairs in women’s clothing stores, either by the entrance so we can catch our breath before we move on to yet another store, or near the change room so we don’t have to be called over to look at something?

I’ve looked at other men in women’s stores and they all have the same glazed over look in their eyes, like they’ve been hypnotized by bright blues, many shades of red, and green patterns on the blouses – do they still call them blouses or just shirts now?

It should be mandatory to put comfort stations in women’s clothing stores, like a play area for men instead of kids. You can picture it, can’t you? – complete with comfortable chairs, a big screen TV with some game on, complimentary drinks and peanuts while you waited.

I know, that’s called a restaurant … never mind. Hey Lil, I’ll meet you in the sports lounge around the corner when you’re done shopping; here’s your purse back.

Here’s the thing: When I look at my life, the things I do each day, places I go, things I say, God should rolls His eyes and be completely uninterested in my life. But it’s absolutely the opposite! He is interested in every aspect of my life, no matter how many times I do, say and think the same things. God doesn’t get worn out being attentive to my life.

That’s Life!

How Do You Feel About Your Cell Phone Company?

I wonder if there is anyone who is completely thrilled with their cell phone company.  We seem to have a love/hate relationship with them.  It doesn’t really matter which company; they all irritate us to some degree.

It’s either that monthly mystery fee, or the plans they offer that are never exactly what we want.  But the biggest problem with cell phone companies is communication.

That’s right! – these communication companies are horrible at communication, the very business they’re in.  I have two family members who are ready to tear their hair out over the ineptitude of two different cell phone companies.

If I owned a communication company, I would want to communicate to my prospective customers in the simplest, clearest way possible to instill enough confidence in them to try my company … NOT in our country, though!

Cell phone websites are some of the most frustrating, complicated and deceiving places you can spend your time on the internet.  The plans offered can’t be taken at face value; you have to investigate what they really mean by things like “local minutes”.

Do local minutes refer to calls I make from local area or calls to local numbers?  Finding yourself on hold for long periods of time with your cell phone company normal.  They sell phones!  They should have a few sitting around for people to answer!

If you have a problem with your phone or with ordering a phone, they don’t blame you necessarily, but they certainly don’t take the blame for their mistakes or incompetence.  You hang up or walk away from the store feeling unsure the issue will ever be resolved.

My daughter has been waiting since September for a phone!  They actually charged her credit card in October.  At last count, there was a problem in the warehouse.  Here’s a solution:  someone go to the warehouse, grab a phone and courier it to her today.  Three weeks later she still doesn’t have the phone.  I wonder what that warehouse problem was?  Did it burn down?!

My wife’s battle to get a phone has been much shorter.  She’s been dealing with the business department of a cell phone company.  I wonder if they really want to sell their phones to businesses.  Hours have been spent on the phone (lots of “on hold” time).  Hours have been spent in stores waiting.  Interestingly, when the store has to call their own company, they get put on hold like everyone else!  In the end, it’s still a mystery how a simple authorization for a phone could get so messed up.

Heres my solution:  Cell phone companies, take that $6.99 access fee millions of us send you and hire someone to create a simple, straightforward website.  Then, hire someone to train your staff in customer relations.  And finally, hire more people to man the phones in Canada.  Oh, and if you run short using that $6.99 fee, fire a top executive and use his salary!

Here’s the thing:  Sometimes we feel like I just described when requesting something from God.  We don’t get an answer or we don’t like the answer we get.  We might be confused and unsure whether the seeming answer is from God or we just made it up.  However, keep in mind that with God, He has the resources, He has the solution, He has your best interest in mind, His timing is perfect.  So stop, cool down, and don’t slam down the phone.  And, by the way, He does hear you, you can ALWAYS get through.

Until Next Time!

Being Ready on Time

A while ago, Lily and I had a function we needed to be dressed up for.  I worked around the house in the morning, and wasn’t ready to go anywhere.  Lily, on the other hand, had already been out a couple of times that morning.

At lunch we made a plan to get out the door in 20 minutes.  Lily said, “I’m ready.  I just have to get changed, and I know what I’m wearing.”  Me?  Well, I still had to shower, shave, and I hadn’t thought of what I was going to wear.

Getting up from the table we both got busy.  By the time I finished my shower and was on to shaving, I heard a disturbing announcement.  The words were “this outfit isn’t going to work”.

I ignored the comment and kept going; I had a deadline to meet.  When I finished in the bathroom, it appeared that Lily had already tried on and rejected a couple of outfits.  I went straight to the closet, looked in, saw my blue suit and made my choice.  Lily was still deciding what to wear.

Given how we started, how was she panicking and I was right on schedule?  I think I figured it out.  It’s our approach to clothes.

When I looked in the closet and saw my blue suit, the only decision I had to make was which shirt to wear with it.  I have three:  a white one which was in the wash, a blue one which was not really appropriate for the occasion, and a grey one which would work just fine. It was that simple for me.

However, when Lily goes to the closet she sees individual pieces of clothing.  She has to determine which pieces might go together and look the best, kind of like choosing to purchase a new outfit.  She’s had the same clothes in her closet for some time and used them in different combinations, yet still she doesn’t think of what has worked before.  It’s a brand new outfit she is looking for!

I think that’s why there are so many women’s clothing stores in shopping malls.  Women are so used to looking for brand new outfits at home, the store becomes an extension of their home closet.

My solution would be to make an outfit playbook, like they have in football.  You lay out the outfits on the bed or put them on and take pictures of all the combinations.  Then, print them out and put them on your wrist band for easy access in making the call.  You just pick the combo that looks best to you given how you feel and how the defense is shaping up.

In the end, Lily found a combination that worked well and we made it to the function on time.  (I can’t help but point out that, despite how we started, I was still waiting at the front door for her – not that unusual.)

Here’s the thing:  We’re going to get ready for God.  Some will get ready quickly and some will take some time to figure it out.  But we will all get ready to meet God one day. I want to be sure that I’m fully dressed when the time comes and not caught still deciding about Him.  That will be one function I don’t want to be unprepared for.

Until Next Time!
