I Was Stuck At This Red Light Forever

The other night I was stuck at a red light for an inordinate amount of time.

I was on my way to our cottage for my yearly planning retreat. On one stretch of highway, that is only one lane in each direction, there was work being done on a bridge.

I don’t know what it is with little bridges but they seem to be the hardest things in the world to fix. It takes months and months and, in some cases, years to repair them.

This bridge is no exception., I think they could build a huge suspension bridge over a vast canyon quicker than completing the repair work to this bridge.

With the work being done on the bridge, it is down to one lane … That’s it! – one lane for traffic going in both directions.

This bridge is maybe only 30 feet in length, but it completely controls the traffic flow.

When I got to the bridge, and saw about 10 vehicles ahead of me, I naturally thought we would get our chance to cross the bridge in no time.

At first I didn’t even put the car in park; I just kept my foot on the brake. I didn’t think this would take long at all.

Boy was I wrong! The cars coming the other way just kept coming. The worst part was there were breaks in the traffic.

Seven, eight or nine cars would pass by going south and then there would be nothing. Every time there was a break, I thought, “Okay, the light changed and now it’s our turn to go.”

No. Just when I thought it would be time for us to start moving, I would see headlights coming from the other direction and another 10, maybe 12 cars, would drive by.

Ten minutes we waited with no sign that we were going to get a green light in the next little while … or month!

But there was a sign of hope.

Just a few yards ahead of me was a gravel road. I quickly looked at the maps on my phone and made a real fast decision to cut out of the line and take a detour.

No one else was doing it but I thought, “Someone has to start it up.”

I cut out of the line and made a break for it. The detour took me about 10 minutes but I came out well beyond the traffic interruption.

When I got to the crossroads to join up with the original highway I had been on, there was a stop light and I had to make a left turn.

As I waited for the light to turn green – because, of course, there was no way I would get a green light when I approached the intersection – I noticed a truck pass by.

I had a suspicion that I’d seen that truck before.

After I got back on the highway, and caught up to the traffic, I was sure it was the same truck. … And I was in the exact same position behind the truck as I was when we had been stuck at the light.

I didn’t gain one inch.

Here’s the thing: Impatience gets us to act, but sometimes our actions don’t really do us any good. When we are impatient with God, our impatience can lead us to take action that just gets in the way of what God is doing. It might delay things further or worse, it could set us back. Wait on God and don’t let your impatience cause you to try to circumvent God’s plan.

That’s life!

How An Ice Storm Can Show Up Your Limitations

For the first time ever we canceled our church service, all because of an ice storm. I really hate giving in to the weather, but I just couldn’t get my car off our street.

ice storm

The day before, I drove to Toronto and back in the freezing rain, and though the trip took longer than normal, we made it … and my hands were not even so cramped that Lily had to pry them off the steering wheel.

But Sunday morning was a different game all together. Saturday I drove over 600 kilometres; Sunday morning I only made it down the driveway – about 25 yards.

I even took two stabs at getting out. With the first one, I couldn’t even get to the end of the driveway. But when I got out of the car to survey the situation, I realized I had a flat tire.

Suddenly a memory from the night before made sense to me. We were pretty tired when we got home from Toronto late Saturday night, but I remembered that as soon as I turned off the car in the garage I heard a hissing sound.

I wondered for a moment what that was from and when I opened the car door I could still hear it. But then Lily said something that got my attention away from the faint warning sound and I didn’t think to check into it further. We just emptied the car and headed for bed.

That hissing sound I heard when I got home was my car tire going flat. After 617 kilometres (383 miles), my tire went flat as soon as our trip was done. It didn’t happen along the way in the freezing rain, in the middle of nowhere. It happened as soon as we were safe in our garage at home. That’s pretty amazing … thanks, God.

So feeling really thankful, I pulled the car back into the garage and changed the tire. My second stab at getting out I thought I would make it for sure. But as easy as it was to get down the driveway, when I got onto the snowy, ice pellet covered ice rink underneath, all I did was spin my tires.

I had to pull the car back into the garage. And we started the process of informing our congregation that there wouldn’t be a service because the pastor couldn’t travel the 8 kilometres to the church.

It was brutal, especially when I had been through a worse ice storm 15 years earlier and still made it to the church, no problem. We had a service then, mind you there were only about 17 of us who showed up.

That time the whole city was hit. They had to call in the military, hydro trucks and personnel from other cities. People were without power for days, huge trees came down, and power lines had to be reconstructed. The city looked like a war zone and I still made it to church!

This time, I just felt like a wimp who got beat by the weather.

Here’s the thing: As independent and capable as we think we are, as sure as we are that nothing will keep us from doing what we want or need to do, we can’t do it all. Sometimes it’s something very small that stands in our way. Take it as God’s message that He wants you to depend on Him and not yourself. Know your limitations and humble yourself before God.

It Was My Own Stupidity

They say that if you put a frog in a pot and slowly turn up the temperature, it won’t jump out. It will allow itself to be cooked alive. I did that to myself, in a manner of speaking, the other day.

The weather reports had called for a massive snow storm through our area. My secretary was prepared; she had her work done ahead of time and left early. I suggested my associate get his things together and get home as well.

That left me. Most people would also think they had better pack up, but not me. I thought I’d just work a little longer, since it was quiet and I wouldn’t be disturbed.

My wife phoned, and said the roads were terrible, that I should leave and work from home. But I just wanted to get a little more done on my sermon. Deep down, I believe I can drive in any condition under any circumstance.

After a while longer, I heard someone at the door. I thought, “Who would be crazy enough to be out in this snow storm?” It then dawned on me that I was the answer to my own question!

I opened the door, to find a friend. The first words out of her mouth were, “Paul, you are not going to get your car out of the parking lot.”

That’s when I really looked outside and saw that the snow was right up to the bottom of my car. I was cooked!

My friends told me they would help, so I packed up quickly and got to my car. I started it, put it in reverse and backed out. Well, I guess I should say I tried. I got stuck when I put it in first gear.

I don’t have snow tires, instead opting for all season radials. I think the tire companies have a scam going. For over thirty years I have only used all season tires on my cars with no problem. But in the last 10 years, tire companies have pressured us to buy winter tires.

I think they changed the rubber compound. That’s why my all seasons don’t work as well any more. It’s a conspiracy to get me to buy snow tires, or at least that’s my theory.

My friends helped me push my car. It took some work, but finally we were able to get me out of the parking lot.

The drive home was also pretty bad. My tires spun and I slipped around at every street light. When I got to my street, it looked much like the parking lot at the church. I didn’t have high hopes for success, but I just went for it and plowed through the snow.

I got stuck right in front of my neighbour’s house, who happened to be out snow blowing his driveway.  He came over and pushed me to the bottom of my driveway.

That’s when I called in the troops – Lily, that is. She came out and, along with my neighbour and his snow blower, we cleared the driveway so I could get the car in the garage … where it stayed for the night.

Here’s the thing: We get ourselves into all kinds of situations that are over our heads. Many times it’s our own doing … or stupidity. Sometimes, we don’t even have the sense to reach out for help. Know this – God isn’t just waiting for us to beg Him for help; He is actively working for us before we even ask.

That’s Life!
