How To Get The Right Temperature

Getting the temperature of things just right is not always easy. 

It certainly wasn’t easy for Goldilocks – she had to try porridge that was too hot and too cold before she found the bowl that was just right. 

I feel a little like that. My office at work is located in a corner of the building. At this time of year, as the day progresses and the sun moves around, the temperature in my office increases significantly. 

Without a window air conditioner I might as well be working in a tin box with the sun beating down on it!

In the winter, I also have trouble because the church is heated by hot water radiators – it’s an old system that doesn’t respond very quickly.

I find that I’m either hot or cold; there is no Goldilocks middle ground for me there. 

So I error on the side of being too warm; I just don’t like being cold. 

Lately, as the temperatures have risen, I’ve found that I’m avoiding the basement of my home. 

I’ll go down there to get something, but I won’t hang out in the family room. I have more of a “get what you need and get out” mindset because it’s cold down there. 

Either I’m getting old or this year it seems colder in my basement than in other years. I think it’s due to how damp it is down there; the last couple of weeks have been rather humid. In fact, even when it was not as warm, the air was humid. 

As I walk down the stairs, I can feel the temperature taking a nose dive with every step. 

I hate to say it but it’s a bitter cold. I just don’t want to be down there too long – unless I’m exercising; then my body temperature rises to counteract the frigid air.

We have the air conditioner going but it hasn’t really made any impact on the humidity. 

So the other day I rolled out our dehumidifier. I don’t think we’ve used it for a few years; possibly it wasn’t as humid as this spring has been. 

Anyway, I thought I would see what it could do to make it more inviting in the family room. 

It’s certainly done something! – I’ve been emptying bucket after bucket of water that it’s collected from the air. 

Now when you go downstairs, it’s a similar temperature to upstairs. 

It’s “just right”, as Goldilocks would say. 

There’s only one problem with this solution, however, and it’s that the dehumidifier is so loud that you can’t enjoy being downstairs while it’s on. 

Now I’m once again avoiding the basement, just for a completely different reason. The dehumidifier is too loud to enjoy watching the Stanley Cup playoffs on TV.

I may be in the market for noise cancelling headphones to watch TV in my family room. 

… I can’t seem to get things just right. 

Here’s the thing: Nothing in our lives stays “just right” for very long. Sooner or later something will come along that will change things and they won’t be just right until you make some adjustments. But think about our world … how long has the earth been kept the precise distance from the sun, ensuring we don’t burn up or freeze? Only God can make things just right and keep them that way. Turn to Him when thing aren’t just right and He will help you make the adjustments.

I Have To Admit It: She Was Right

I like being right; I think most people do. So I hate it when Lily is right and I’m wrong.

It happened the other day and, don’t get me wrong here, she was wrong in so many ways, but right when it counted.

Lily wanted to see the Snowbirds – and I’m not talking about Canadians who go down to the southern States to ride out the winters. I’m talking about the Canadian Air Force Snowbirds,  the world famous pilots and planes that do acrobatics and synchronized flying at air shows.

Living in Kingston, we get to see more than our fair share of them and this past weekend they were here to put on a show.

I could tell Lil was very determined to see them so I didn’t put up a fuss or even comment on how many times she’s already seen them. I just asked, “When are we leaving?”

I wasn’t paying too much attention to her answer, but in the back of my mind I thought she was cutting it close.

I was right. The traffic was bumper to bumper all the way to Fort Henry, over which the Snowbirds would be performing.

Lily seemed upset with me that she had picked the same time to leave as thousands of others had. I think she wished I’d driven a different route or driven on the sidewalk to get around the streaming line of traffic in front of us.

Three times she told me what I should do after it was too late to do it. It was like the past and her present were all convoluted together.

Lily’s stress was mounting as it became more and more apparent that we would be in our car trying to find a parking spot when the air show was going on.

I couldn’t take much more so I parked the car, probably about 2 or 3 kilometres from the Fort.

We got out and started walking past a line of cars that were barely moving … mind you, we were walking at a good clip, but I could tell that Lily wanted to walk even faster.

When we arrived at Fort Henry we had to walk up a hill. All along that hill there were people sitting down waiting for the Snowbirds to arrive.

I thought we could just join them, sit on the side of the hill and count our blessing that we made it before the show began.

But no, that’s not what Lil wanted. She wanted to walk to the top of the hill and then go around the back of the Fort, overlooking Lake Ontario, because that was the best backdrop for the planes.

I thought, “She’s being greedy. We made it on time; now she’s pushing it.” But though my legs were tired, we got there just minutes before the planes came roaring overhead.

I have to admit, seeing the Snowbirds from that vantage point was truly spectacular. She was right.

Here’s the thing: I know this is true in my life, and I’m sure that it’s true for you: There are many times when I think I know what is right and best for me, or a family member, or for work, yet God doesn’t seem to bring what I think is needed. Unlike us, who are right some of the time, God is right all the time. Somehow we have to get our minds and emotions around that fact … even though it might go against our better judgement.

How To Ensure Your Direction Is Right

Usually, I feel that it’s other drivers who prevent me from getting to my destination. But yesterday it seemed there was a whole conspiracy at work that had nothing to do with other drivers.

It was more like a government conspiracy, I’m sure. It could have been something like Orwell’s “Big Brother” is watching, or a group that my dad would always rage about, “the Bilderbergs”.

Now I don’t want to begin another fearmongering rumour, but there was definitely something going on that was a little like the Twilight Zone show . . .

I was coming home from my annual planning week up at my cottage. The trip had been pretty painless coming into Toronto, when suddenly the traffic started to get heavy and then slowed down to a crawl.

I thought I was in rush hour traffic, but it was Friday night at about 9 pm – it should have been clear sailing!

As I inched my way to a connector highway (which, by the way, would take me the rest of the way home), without warning – no sign, no detour route, nothing – it was closed.

I had to go west, in the opposite direction of my home. I had planned on a 2 1/2 hour drive home from there, but that wasn’t going to happen now.

What made it worse was that there was a road worker who looked like he’d just finished putting the pylons out to block my way.

That wasn’t going to stop me. The next exit was a familiar one and I knew I could get off and back on heading east to go home. I took it and thought, “This is not going to cost me much time at all.”

As I crossed over the highway to get going east, I noticed a road crew guy putting out pylons on that ramp as well. I couldn’t believe it! How did they think people were to get home?

I needed to go east, but instead I was forced to go west, and now I was going south! I got on an eastbound street as soon as I could and then came to a route that would take me back up to my homeward-bound highway.

But as I made my way towards the ramp, it was closed too and I was forced to continue north, past the highway I wanted, and basically coerced into taking a toll highway east towards home.

(If you’re feeling a little hypnotized right about now, you can imagine how I felt!) It was right about then that it dawned on me: They are trying to funnel us all onto the pay-as-you-drive highway to get a cash infusion towards their conspiracy plans!

I never saw that road crew guy again, but I’m sure he’s taken some blood oath of some kind to belong to some dark, unknown, secret society of asphalt workers somewhere.

Here’s the thing: We can be led by circumstance, friends, cravings and opportunities to go in directions we never intended to go in. It’s not like we started out with the thought of going there or doing that, it’s just one turn led to another and, “Oh look where I am now!” The only way we can protect ourselves from that happening is to monitor our direction with God. Let God navigate your direction, and, if you get lost or off course, check in with Him to get you back on the right road.

Customer Service . . . I’d Like Some!

Customer service is a very important part of a business or any organization. In these days with social media, customer service is even more important. If someone is treated poorly and has lots of followers on Twitter and Facebook, a bad review of your product or organization could go viral quickly.

So you would think companies would be mindful of listening to their customers, trying to understand them, instead of frustrating them to the point of outrage.

I found out that all depends on who you are dealing with. If you are talking to a customer service rep, they are on your side, trying to make it easy for you to get the result you are looking for.

However, if you are dealing with someone in, let’s say, the accounting department, they are more likely concerned that numbers match up in their books. They don’t care about your experience or how you feel. They feel good when they experience a ledger that looks neat and all balanced-like.

You might be able to see where this is going. That’s right, I had a customer service issue with our photocopier company at work and I was dealing with someone who really only cared about applying a credit to our account … a credit they should have sent to our old photocopier company to buy it out! I just finished writing a long letter to the company – maybe that should have been my blog today!

So, as I take an extra beta blocker this morning (just kidding) to keep my blood pressure in the earth’s atmosphere, I need to get a few things off my chest.

When dealing with a customer, listen to them. Hear not only their words but the emotion that’s behind the words. If you sense there is a frustration, don’t repeat what you have already done (and which failed) over and over again. It does NOT calm someone down!

When you have promised to take care of something for the customer and have not done so, don’t ask the customer to research and come up with a solution. Find a solution for them.

When a customer comes back to you with a solution, don’t tell the customer again what you have already done (and which failed). It doesn’t give the customer the sense that you are listening to them.

When you realize that the issue is something beyond you, don’t make the customer craft a letter to present their case to the people above your pay grade. YOU go to bat for them.

Finally when you realize that maybe, just maybe, your company dropped the ball (even a tiny bit), acknowledge it and tell the customer you are sorry, or they will feel you don’t care about your customers, and that might start something on Twitter or Facebook.

Here’s the thing: We often get upset with God’s customer service when He doesn’t answer us, or provide what we are looking for from Him, or even when we think “how could God let that happen”. But consider this … He is perfect and we aren’t. We’re the ones who have messed up and are in the wrong, yet He is still gracious, and patient and loving to us. Wow! That is great customer service.
