It Couldn’t Be Easier To Return

I’m always looking for an easy return.

I have a tape measure in our cottage that doesn’t return very easily. You have to tug hard to pull it out and then you have to push it back in. I want to throw it out and get a tape measure that will easily return after I extend it to measure something.

So often we want an easy return.

When you buy something that isn’t quite right, you want to be able to return it to the store for an exchange or refund … and you want that process to go smoothly.

It wasn’t always easy to return items. At one time, when you bought something, the store had no responsibility for it unless it was defective. Only then could you return it.

If you bought something and the colour didn’t match, or it wasn’t the right thing after all, those were not grounds for returning it. You made the decision to purchase it, and it was yours – period.

There were no easy returns.

Something changed along the way, however, to the point that almost everything has become easily returnable.

Recently I returned an item twice to a store before I got the right size. Both times it was an easy return – no questions asked. (Read about that here.)

There are some things that return so easily that you actually have to work hard to keep them from returning.

I grew up playing with yo-yos. I still toss one from time to time. In fact, when I see one on a store shelf, I have a hard time resisting the temptation to pick it up and give it a toss.

When I see a child with a yo-yo, it’s all I can do to restrain myself from saying, “Here, give it to me and I’ll show you how it works.”

You see, the thing about yo-yos is that they are designed to return. But to be able to do tricks and to yo properly, you have to train it to sleep.

Sleeping is basically delaying its return, making it spin out on the end of the string, so that you can perform some magical formations with that string.

It takes training to learn how to do it.

Nowadays you can buy a yo-yo that has a clutch built into it that will make it automatically sleep. But with a real yo-yo, if you place it in someone’s hand and they throw it down, it will automatically return.

It’s just that easy.

Here’s the thing: Do you realize how easy it is to return to God? I believe some of us think, or have trained ourselves to think, that it’s hard or difficult. The fact is that it’s easy to return to God; we’re designed for it. If you look at the Bible, the Old Testament is filled with page after page of examples where it was easy for people to return to God. He makes it easy. God is so patient and so eager that we return to Him, He sent His Son Jesus to make it easy for us. When you sin, don’t train yourself or fool yourself into thinking it’s too hard to return to Christ. It is easy – just humble yourself and return. He’s waiting. It really is just that easy.

Waking Up Has Never Been Easier

There are some people who have an easy time waking up early … I’m not one of them.

On Monday we had to catch an early flight out of Toronto. Even with staying overnight at our daughter’s, we still needed to get up early to make it to the airport on time.

I’m definitely not one who wakes up by my inner clock. Even though I get up at the same time every day, I still need an alarm – otherwise I can keep sleeping.

As a teen, I used to prove that every weekend; I could easily sleep in until 11 or 11:30 am. But I didn’t like how much of the day I wasted so I started setting an alarm.

I just don’t wake up unless that alarm goes off.

But not Monday. I actually woke up two minutes before my alarm was set to go off and it was set for a half hour before my regular alarm.

I was amazed! … so amazed that I laid in bed those extra two minutes pondering what had just happened. This was a very rare moment for me and I needed to savour it, for at least two minutes – I think I even took three.

I had gone to bed late, had to rise early and somehow my body knew when to stir me from my slumber.

If you don’t think that’s pretty amazing, let me tell you I’m the guy who would look forward to 7:30 am T-off times, yet be the one whose buddies would have to throw pebbles at my window to wake me up … while my alarm was going off.

I also can turn off an alarm clock and never know I did it. I position my alarm so that I have to actually move rather than just flop my arm out of the covers and hit a button.

I’ve been getting up at 6 am for over 20+ years and I still don’t wake up on my own. I need a jolt to my system, that jumpstart to kick my brain in gear.

I need that voice calling me back from the deep.

This morning, however, I did the impossible, proving the impossible is possible.

… I also fall sleep fast, and then not much will wake me.

When I worked with youth, I never told them how soundly I slept because I feared they would leave the cabin as soon as I was out. I would try to stay awake as long as I could just to make sure my group was asleep before me.

I know, it’s a tough burden I bare.

But one miracle morning does not constitute a trend. I’ll continue to set an alarm to wake up … I don’t want to end up keeping the boys waiting for me Thursdays at 7 am for our men’s prayer time.

At least they won’t come to my window and throw stones at it until I wake up.

Here’s the thing: Christ is going to return one day. The question for each of us is, “How do we want to wake up to that?” If we only wake up to the blaring alarm, it will be too late to respond. But if we wake up to that inner clock, telling us it’s time to put our faith in Christ, we have time to ponder the amazing grace of God’s love for us and to respond by putting our trust in Him.

Staying Warmer Longer Just Got Easier

I just got a little helper to stay warm longer in the winter.

Staying warm in Canada in the winter – especially this winter – is something that’s on your mind the minute you start getting dressed for the day.

For Lily, it always matters what the temperature is outside; she wants to know what the weather is like no matter what.

There are times I’ve responded, “What does it matter what the temperature is outside? You are getting into a car in a garage and I’m dropping you off at the door of our destination.”

How cold it is shouldn’t matter in those situations, but somehow it does. I’m not going to try to figure that one out.

But for me, sometimes I have to shovel twice, once at home and once at work, before I begin my work day. You have to think about the amount of time you’re going to be spending outside.

But last night I got a little app for my phone that helps take some of the chill out of the cold temperatures we are facing.

It’s a parking app.

Yes, I know they’ve been out there for some time now, but I just discovered their usefulness … and that’s all that really matters to me.

I got hooked on it by accident, too.

In the last couple of weeks, I’ve noticed signs in parking lots around town, giving instructions on how to pay for parking through an app.

Well, last night it was one of those damp, chilly evenings where the cold pierces through to your bones, and the wind sucks the life out of you like one of those food sealer gadgets.

I knew I didn’t have change for the parking station, and all Lily had was bills. She handed me a $5 bill and, though I knew the station also accepted credit, I took it anyway.

As I got out of the car and turned around, I saw one of those signs for paying with an app.

I didn’t care that we were a little late for the hockey game. I was cold and couldn’t get my head around standing at a pay station, trying to get my credit card out without taking off my gloves.

I noted the name of the app and the parking lot zone number and got back into the car. I downloaded the app and paid for my parking all in the comfort of our warm car.

Now if they could come up with a transporter feature on the app that would make it perfect! Unfortunately, we still needed to get out of the car and walk a couple of blocks to the arena.

By the way, the app also warns you when you are coming to the end of your paid time. If you need more time, you can buy it right from your phone – no need to go outside and brave the weather just to add another half hour of parking time.

This is definitely my new favourite app right now.

Here’s the thing: In our day and age, we have greater access to God’s Word than ever before. Not only is the printed version so easily obtained, there are free Bible apps for you phone or tablet, giving you access to the scriptures any place and any time. It is so easy to read the Bible. But the one thing you still have to do is open it up and read it. Let’s use the conveniences we have to get God’s Word into our minds and hearts.

That’s Life!
